Obituary

Suzanne de Lesdernier, 69, of Lowell, MA passed on Saturday, December 28, 2024 with her loving husband at her side, at Lowell General Hospital, from complications associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

She was married to Joseph Tremblay with whom she celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2024.

Born in Weymouth, MA, she was the daughter of the late Theodore de Lesdernier and Elizabeth (née Guild) de Lesdernier.  She was raised in Marshfield and Shutesbury, MA.

She graduated from Amherst High School, with the class of 1973.

She retired in January 2023 from the Lowell Public School System, specifically from the Wang Middle School, as a paraprofessional.

Suzanne’s passion was environmental education, a field in which she held a master’s degree. After working at Otter Lake, NH, an environmental education camp for school-age children she was hired as an herbalist at the Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, MA.  From there, she worked as an island manager for the Boston Harbor Islands. After moving to Lowell, she worked as a park ranger for both the National Historical and the Heritage State Parks.  She also ran community gardening and after-school programs for the Lowell YWCA, and she taught in the Lowell School system for 18 years. She was an active member of Old Sturbridge Village for most of her life and she volunteered at Plimoth Plantation. She and her husband Joseph fostered many children through the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. Family genealogy, an interest of hers, helped her locate previously separated family members.

Suzanne was widely known and respected as a tireless environmental advocate. She organized and educated on recycling, light pollution, habitat preservation, and animal conservation. And she developed and maintained numerous gardens in and around the City of Lowell. She worked and volunteered for the Lowell Folk Festival since its beginning. She actively advocated for all the earth’s flora and fauna, lately focusing on monarch butterflies, right whales and elephants. In her retirement years, she befriended and assisted homeless Lowellians she encountered. Suzanne was approachable, an excellent communicator and collaborator, and she captivated her listeners with her impressive knowledge of the natural world. She was kind and generous and much loved by all who received her message and will be remembered and held dear in many hearts.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her brother Daniel de Lesdernier and his wife Monica Pulci of Greenfield, MA, sisters-in-law, Michelle and her husband John Golden of Pelham, NH, Cheryl and her husband Leo Chartier of Shirley, MA, Susette “Susie” Tremblay of Lowell. She is also survived by a niece Ilaria de Lesdernier of Burlington, VT, a nephew Marcello de Lesdernier of Manchester, England, as well as her close friends and beloved pets – Lucky, the dog and Tommy Tucker, the cat.

She was predeceased by her brother Louis “Ricky” F. de Lesdernier, who passed in 2001.

Looking way back to High School. Suzanne was kind, funny, smart and a delightful bit of a nature nerd. It seems that passion followed her throughout her life. I’m thankful for the tremendous good she was able to do and sorry she left this world so early. Sincere condolences to her family.
