Obituary

Mary Catherine McLaughlin, 63, a lifelong resident of Lowell and beloved daughter of the late Joseph D. and Margaret A. (Geary) McLaughlin, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on November 30th.

Mary was a graduate of Lowell High School and the Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing. While in nursing school, she spent summers as a park ranger for the Lowell National Historical Park, where she developed a genuine appreciation for Lowell’s history. Mary began her nursing career on the Medical/Surgical ward at Lowell General before transitioning to the City of Lowell, where she worked in several public health specialties. She ultimately spent over 30 years as the senior school nurse at Lowell High School, a position she truly loved.

To quote a former colleague of Mary’s, “There will be many graduates of Lowell High School who will fondly remember ‘Mary the Nurse.’” She was active as a union representative for the public health nurses in Lowell and played a significant role in addressing public health issues that arose at Lowell High. Mary also spent many summers as the nurse on duty for the police-sponsored D.A.R.E. Program.

Mary and her wide circle of friends and family enjoyed traveling, volunteering, or simply gathering together to enjoy sporting events, the Lowell Folk Festival, or concerts at Boarding House Park.

Mary is survived by her sisters Margaret (Peggy) Shepard and her husband William of Kennebunk, Maine; Carol McLaughlin Gray and her husband Peter of Venice, Florida; and her brother John McLaughlin of Quincy, Massachusetts. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, their children and families, and her lifelong and dearest friend/sister, Elizabeth (Beth) Donaghey. Mary is pre-deceased by her brothers, James Edward McLaughlin and William Joseph McLaughlin.

The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Lowell General who cared for Mary in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Lowell High School Special Education Department: 978-674-4322.
