James A. Smith of Andover died January 8, 2022 at Lawrence General Hospital after a brief illness, aged 93 years. He was the beloved husband of Karen A. (Shepherd) Smith, with whom he would have celebrated 39 years of marriage this March 26th.
He was born in Boston, October 21, 1928, a son of the late Joseph H. and Helen (O’Leary) Smith. He grew up in Belmont and was a graduate of Belmont High School, with the Class of 1946. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in January, 1948. He furthered his education earning a BS in Marketing from Northeastern University.
Jim started his sales career at National Cash Register where he worked for several years, and then worked for Dictronics in Needham. Before his full retirement, he worked part-time for The RIDE. He was an active tennis player and enjoyed boating, scuba diving, rollerblading, golf, and deer hunting in Canada.
Jim is survived by his son, James A. Smith, Jr., of Wayland, and many friends.
It being his wish, funeral services were private.
