Dorothy Carol Doyle, 84, of Lowell, died peacefully at her home in the Highlands, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
She was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from St. Lourdes Academy, Class of 1958. She went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Elizabeth Nursing School in Dayton, Ohio. After graduating and becoming a registered nurse, she worked as a travel nurse, serving in U.S. hospitals as far west as Seattle and as far east as Nantucket. While working in Boston, she met Frederick James Doyle; they were married for 55 years before his death in 2020.
While raising their family, Dorothy also worked as a nurse for Lowell General Hospital, Main Campus, for over 30 years, retiring in 2002. She was a long-time communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Church, where she also taught religious education for many years.
Dorothy was a faithful friend and maintained close friendships for decades while still making new friends, especially in the North Hampton, New Hampshire summer community where she summered for the past 10 years. She loved spending time at the beach, it was her special place. She was also an avid New England sports fan, always rooting for her beloved Red Sox.
She loved to travel, whether physically taking a trip, or within the pages of a great book, especially mysteries. No matter where she went, her yarn, tablet, painting, and crossword puzzles came along. She had a quiet, but independent demeanor, was a wonderful, compassionate listener and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine (Lesniak) Mader, her brother Charles Mader, and brother-in-law Paul McMeniman.
She is survived by her four children – son Brad Doyle of Lowell, MA and daughters, Carolyn Cutting and her husband Greg of Sebago, ME, Gweyn Doyle of Lowell, MA, and Bridget Doyle of Melrose, MA – three granddaughters, Monica Couvillion, Rachel Travers, and Kristen Travers – Sister-in-law, Maureen (Doyle) McMeniman, as well as nieces and nephews, Colleen (McMeniman) Dugas and her husband Doug of Chelmsford, Todd McMeniman and his wife Lucy of Nottingham, NH, Greg McMeniman and his wife Sheila of North Chelmsford, and Amy McMeniman-Pinheiro and her husband Louis of Lowell.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be set at a later date.
