Alvan (Al) E. Levenson, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026 surrounded by his loving daughters, Elizabeth and Stacey. Born April 5, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts, Al was the son of the late Charles Levenson and Ethel Elliott-Elyutavich Levenson. Al graduated from Brookline High School in 1954 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps in November 1955. He served during the Korean war as an Aircraft Radar Technician on an aircraft carrier stationed in Hawaii. He received Medals of Good Conduct and National Defense Service. After his honorable discharge, he attended Tufts University in Boston and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry in 1962. Al married June Martino Lion of Brookline, Massachusetts in 1964 and they resided in Newton. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1965. In addition to his daughter Liz, he raised his stepdaughter Stacey and all together they regularly travelled to Europe and the Caribbean Islands enjoying the cities and the beaches and the varied cultures. Al loved to play tennis, ice hockey, ski, windsurf, horseback ride, and jog by the cranberry bogs near their summer home on the cliffs of Manomet, Mass.

After working at Schrafft’s Candy Company as a Quality Control Officer, he developed a new polymer formulation for floor wax and called his new company Spectrowax. In addition, he owned and managed a real estate block in Needham including the Needham Cinema. He then started a second business, Professional Supply Service, which he owned and operated until his retirement.

Alvan is survived by June Lion Levenson, his daughters Elizabeth Mumford and Stacey Lion-Gardiner and her husband Ed Gardiner, and his grandchildren Elaine Carey Mumford, Alexis Hill Mumford, Sarah Lion-Egan, Annie Lion-Lee, and Henri Lion-Gardiner, his brother Norman Levenson and Norman’s children Charles Levenson and Dayala Levenson. Alvan was grateful for the love and support of George Mumford, and his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends throughout his life.

His daughters are grateful for the support and care provided by the staff of his assisted living facility and hospice provider.

He will be sorely missed.

Alvan requested that his ashes be scattered without a service.
