Loving Mother and Grandmother
Clara Elizabeth (Arey) Stupakewicz went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the age of 97. She was the widow of the late Henry W. Stupakewicz (2014) to whom she was married for 71 years.
She was born in Billerica, August 20, 1921, one of 12 children of the late Lawrence and Teresa (Burlamachi) Arey.
As a teenager, Clara taught sewing in 4H, won the bronze medal in a Nuttings Lake swim competition, and won first place in a high school word derivation contest. Clara also attended modeling school in Boston.
After receiving her high school diploma, she moved to Connecticut where she assembled hand grenades in support of the war effort. While there, Clara met Henry, whom she soon married.
Clara served as an Army wife during Henry's military career. While he was deployed overseas during World War II, the Korean War, and the war in Vietnam, Clara remained in Massachusetts and kept the household and growing family running smoothly. As a military wife, Clara also lived in Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, California, and France. At the age of 52, Clara returned to school, and in 1978, earned her B.A. in Art Education from the University of Lowell.
Clara was an avid reader and an active participant in exercise classes at the Lowell Senior Center. She was a devout communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Church.
She is survived by nine children: Thomas F. and his wife, Paula; Carla M. McCoy; Anna V. Pratt and her husband, Richard; Judy T. Petros and her husband, Frederick; Ellen L. Garneau; Peter H.; Edward J. and his wife, Vicky; Matthew J. and his wife, Marie; and David M. and his wife, Marcia; 28 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Doris McDougall, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Arey. She was the grandmother of the late Elizabeth Stupakewicz.

Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, on Thursday, from 4 to 7 PM. Clara’s Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Stevens St., Lowell, at 10 AM. (Kindly meet at Church.) Interment in the spring in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
