World War II Army Veteran
Lifelong Soldier of the Salvation Army; Master Mason

Ernest F. "Ernie" Mackness Sr., of Lowell, died peacefully January 11, 2019, at Lowell General Hospital, after a brief illness, aged 95 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Pappastergion) Mackness, with whom he had celebrated 57 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2003.

Born in Boston, November 17, 1923, a son of the late Ernest C. and Grace (Gilmore) Mackness. Ernie graduated from Canton High School with the Class of 1941.

Mr. Mackness enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1942, serving with the V Fighter Command of the Fifth Air Force, stationed at Itazuke Air Base, Japan. He also served overseas in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa, until his Honorable Discharge in 1945. After proudly serving his country, Ernie and Mary were married in 1946. In 1951, they built a home in Lowell where they raised their family. For over 25 years, he was affiliated with Trans World Services as a Printing Supervisor.

Ernie was a lifelong soldier of The Salvation Army, where he was a Senior Bandsman from the age of 13 until he retired in late 2018. A local officer of the Lowell Citadel Corps for the past 37 years, he also served as Bandsman, Songster, and Corp Treasurer. He was a Master Mason with the William North Masonic Lodge since 1963, having attained Master of the Lodge. He was a member of Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington. He served on the Advisory Board of the Lowell Chapter of DeMolay for 46 years, was holder of The Legion of Honor, and served in various other positions. Ernie was a member of the Lowell Masonic Association and Eastern Star.

“Papa” is survived by two sons, Ernest F. Mackness Jr. and his wife Loretta, and Edward D. Mackness, all of Lowell; two grandchildren, Sarah of Lowell and Brian of Shrewsbury; a brother, Horace Mackness and his wife Nancy of Canton, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother and brother-in-law the late Joseph and Edna Fay Mackness, and brother-in-law of the late Andrew and Louise Pappastergion, and John and Teddy Pappastergion.

MACKNESS - In Lowell, January 11, 2019. Ernest F. Mackness Sr., of Lowell, aged 95 years. Beloved husband of the late Mary (Pappastergion) Mackness. WWII Army Veteran. Friends will be received at The Salvation Army Community Center, Appleton Street, Lowell, on Saturday from 9 to 11 AM, followed by his Funeral Service at 11 AM. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations to The Salvation Army Band Fund, 150 Appleton St., Lowell, 01853.
