Obituary for Robert W. Doherty

Devoted Husband, Loving Father and Grandfather
U. S. Army Korean War Veteran

Robert W. Doherty, a long-time resident of the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, died peacefully on December 10, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, aged 84 years. He was the beloved husband of Theresa M. (Lemelin) Doherty, with whom he had shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in North Andover, April 9, 1934, a son of the late Howard A. and Dorothy (Moriarty) Doherty. He received his early education in the North Andover school system at Merrimack Grammar School, and graduated from Johnson High School with the Class of 1952. Mr. Doherty furthered his education at the Newman Preparatory School in Boston.

Robert held various jobs prior to enlisting in the United States Army on March 12, 1954, where he served with the 351st Quartermaster Detachment in Incheon, Korea, until his honorable discharge on February 20, 1957. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Returning home, he became associated with Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners for several years, earning the award of Salesman of the Year in 1960. He then took a position with Prudential Life Insurance Company as a registered representative and agent, where he worked for over 20 years, retiring in 1999 due to illness.

Robert was an avid reader and an armchair quarterback. However, his number one priority was his family. He had a great sense of humor, a big heart, and a warm soul. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Besides his loving wife Theresa, he is survived by a son, William J. Doherty, a daughter, Susan (Doherty) Goyette and her husband Daniel; two granddaughters, Melanie Goyette and Danielle Goyette, and a grandson, Shane R. Goyette, all of Lowell. Three great-grandchildren, Aliyah Arevalo, Gabriella Arevalo and Bradley Robert Goyette. Two brothers-in-law, Timothy Lynch and Frank Androwski. Also by several nieces and nephews, close friends and dear neighbors. He was the brother of the late Madeline Lynch, Ann Androwski, and Patrick, Howard, Dale, and Stephen Doherty.
