Condolence: Mr. & Mrs. Fournier...My grandmother was always very fond of your both and quickly became 2 of my favorite people. You were always so welcoming to let this annoying little girl play in your yard and have cookies. My mother always spoke so highly of you every time she would see you out and about. Deepest condolences to your family during this time.
May you rest in sweet peace.

Condolence: When have you met someone for the very first time and felt like you’ve known them forever?

I entered the Fournier Fold in an unusual way. The typical x-wife and her parents may not want to associate with the new partner of the son-in-law, but the Fournier’s are not typical. I met them seventeen years ago at a family gathering for Roger’s birthday party; a house full of people I did not know and my feeling quite nervous.

I rang the doorbell. The door swung open and I’m greeted with Roger’s contagious big smile, his hand extended, and an invitation to come into the house: “Keith! You’re here! So wonderful to finally meet you”. I’m welcomed in; the delicious aroma of Roger’s homemade meat pies engulfed the kitchen.

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Roger quickly navigated through the crowd where I arrived to meet Pauline, her arms open to give me a big hug. Are these people my long-lost family that I didn’t know I had?

My feelings of awkwardness immediately subsided as I went from one introduction to the next; so many welcoming smiles. Everyone in the family exhibited the same warmth which undoubtedly flowed from Roger and Pauline, and the long line that preceded them. “What a blessed family this is” I thought to myself, “how lucky am I to be here!”

The following month Roger and Pauline hosted their traditional Christmas Eve gathering. My 9-year-old son Ben accompanied me, who was a bit anxious to meet a household full of strangers. I explained that there was nothing but love beyond these doors. Delicious food, decorations and smiling faces quickly turned his fears into joy. On the way home that night, Ben said “you’re right, I feel like I’ve known them forever!”.

Roger and Pauline will live in our hearts always and they will be deeply missed. I know they are now greeting their friends and family with open arms and big smiles, and I will again someday return that hug.
