Obituary for Sanford O. Stephens Jr.

Sanford O. Stephens Jr.
Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather
U.S. Air Force Korean War Veteran

Sanford O. Stephens Jr., 81, a longtime resident of Lowell, passed away suddenly on September 2, 2018, at Lowell General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Peggy J. (Chaplic) Stephens.

Born in Aitkin, MN, on March 22, 1937, a son of the late Sanford and Helen (Ravander) Stephens. After marrying Peggy, the love of his life, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served his country from 1956 to 1960, including tours in Germany.

For many years, he worked for the Greyhound Bus Company and Lowell Transit Authority, where he will be greatly missed. In retirement, he especially enjoyed meeting up with the many friends he made during those years for daily coffee. Sanford was a longtime member of the Lowell Elks, and enjoyed playing shuffle board and bingo.

Sanford enjoyed watching New England sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. While “Football Sundays” with his family was his favorite time of the year, he never missed a family party in any season. His door was always open, and not a day passed by without any number of family members dropping in to say hi, and that’s exactly how he wanted it.

He is survived by six children, Cynthia Cowgill and her husband Michael of Dracut, Sandra Ryan and her husband William of Townsend, Lisa Byron and her husband George of Tyngsboro, Leslie Stephens and her partner Richard Eklund, and Kelly Senecal and her partner Neil Bernadini, all of Lowell, and Vicki LaForge of Tacoma, WA, and a former son-in-law, Steve LaForge of Merrimack, NH. Cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Erik LaForge and Courtney Dumais, Justin and Cody LaForge, Billy and Shawn Ryan, Alicia Ryan and CJ Dalton, Brittany and Adam Byron, Jillian Stephens and Billy Martin, Jordan Stephens, Shelby Catorio and Joseph Gagnon, Olivia Cowgill, Jaden and Evie LaForge, Izabella Gagnon and Logan Dalton. Siblings, Patricia Elmer, Jane Briggs, Neil Stephens, and Alan Stephens. He was the father of the late Scott Stephens.

Friends will be received at the Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, on Thursday, from 3 to 7 p.m. His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at the North Chelmsford Congregational Church, 15 Princeton St., North Chelmsford, at 11 a.m. (Kindly meet at Church.) Interment will be private. Funeral Director, Frederick W. Healy.
