Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather
Ara George Donoian, 92, of Lowell, passed away February 11, 2018, in Needham, MA.
Ara was born in Ramallah, Palestine in 1925 where his family fled, escaping the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Ara came to the United States at age 11, and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1946, where he excelled in academics. He later worked at AT&T for many years until his retirement.
Ara met Eva while she was living on Back Central Street in Lowell. They married on November 18, 1951, embarking on a 66-year journey of love and devotion.
A gifted athlete, Ara was a standout baseball pitcher in high school. He was scouted by the Detroit Tigers and asked to play for its farm team, though he declined, citing family responsibilities. Instead, he played semi-professional baseball locally. Ara was also an avid tennis and badminton player, loved to watch (and complain about) sports, especially the Red Sox, and loved to read. He also had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed performing in shows at his assisted living program as well as church congregations. Most of all, Ara took pride in his strong work ethic, belief in education for his children, and the loving relationships he had in his life with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eva (Dadian) Donoian, four children, Dianne Rees and her husband Bill of Millis, MA, Gary Donoian and his wife Melanie of East Greenwich, RI, Stephen Donoian and his wife Taleen of Hopkinton, MA, and Kathryn Eskandarian and her husband Michael of Bedford, MA; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one on the way. Also, many loving sisters and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mgrditch and Paris (Magarian) Donoian, his twin sister, Aida Depoian, and a younger brother, Haig Donoian.
